File Extension WMV

What is a Windows Media Video File?

The .wmv file extension belongs to the application Windows Media Player developed by Microsoft Corporation, and is usually pre-installed with their Windows operating systems. The .wmv file may contain video or audio data that can be played using the application, or other audio/video playback application that is installed with a WMV codec plug-in.

The data in a .wmv file is encoded using Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF), and will serve as a container for it. Initially, the audio/video data file is originally created using the ASF file extension and re-converted into a WMV codec for compatibility.

In using other applications aside from Windows Media Player, a codec is required to play the .wmv file. A codec is typical software that contains data to read a specified file format in any system, and create audio and images provided by the file. In most cases, a codec can be downloaded for free from its original manufacturer.

Note, however, that you need to have a specified codec to play a certain file, which can cause an error when substituted with others.

Windows operating systems from 98 and above are pre-installed with codec supports for the .wmv format. Playing video and audio files in this format might take its toll on low-spec systems, considering the compression involved when it was created. A normal .wmv file requires high-end processing speed, a decent RAM value, and a video card that supports that technology used to create the WMV file, and audio hardware.

To play a .wmv file, open Windows Media Player or any WMV-compatible applications, and load the file into it. If opening the file returns an error, especially when other applications are used, then the WMV codec is not installed.
