File Extension RM

What is a Media Files?

Files with the RM extension are files that are container formats, development by Real Networks for their program called Real Media. Files in the RM file extension are used to store media information, and are used in tandem with either RealVideo or RealAudio.

It is very popularly used for streaming multimedia content via the Internet. Constant bitrate (CBR) is the usual sampling rate used when streaming the RM file extension, although the Real Networks has already developed a new container that supports variable bitrate (VBR) sampling and is named Real Media Variable Bitrate (RMVB).

Files saved in the RM file extension are supported by a long list of multimedia players across different types/platforms of operating systems (e.g. RealPlayer, Real Alternative codec pack). The files in the RM file extension are part of Real Networks proprietary formats. It can be used by many platforms which include Windows, Mac, Linux, and even mobile phones.

RealVideo and RealAudio are both used in the RM file extension. The Real Media suite is very suitable for use as a media stream format. It can be viewed as it is sent through the Internet or through a local network. It is applicable for tasks like watching TV, or listening to a radio station over a connection, since it does not require a user to completely download the media before they can watch it.

When streaming files in the RM file extension through RealVideo or RealAudio, they usually use a constant bitrate so that the data being streamed is in a uniform amount sent through the connection at any given second; although, recently, Real Networks has acquainted its users with the option for variable bitrate.

This allows media to be encoded in a greater video quality, but the format is not suited for streaming because of the spikes generated in the connection. Media files that have fast or rapid motion demand a higher bandwidth from the connection. If the data stream significantly increases, it could tax the connection and possibly interrupt the data steam.
