File Extension PPS

What is a Slide Show File?

The most common and probably well known association of the file extension .pps is with the Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation program. The .pps file extension represents the slideshow created with the software, which can be viewed either by the Microsoft related programs, or by viewers and third party applications, developed by other manufacturers that are capable of interpreting the finished file.

Some of the more widely used programs includes the OpenOffice.org, including the StarOffice productivity suites, and a host a numerous PowerPoint viewer utilities. The file extension .pps is related to the PPT format file, which also represents a Microsoft Office PowerPoint generated document.

The main difference between the two formats mainly lies in the fact that the file extension .pps is associated with a final form of the presentation, and therefore does not allow any further editing. Usually, when the file extension .pps is sent for example as part of an e-mail (attachment), once activated, it will not open the associated program but rather will automatically play the presentation.

This is not the case with the PPT format, which once accessed will automatically open the corresponding program that is usually the Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The most common implementation of the .pps file extension is in the world of education, business, and communications.

The file extension .pps can be renamed to carry the PPT format without causing any ill effect in its contents. Both formats can contain a combination of any, or all types of media, which can range from simple text to video files, which are saved as part of the .pps file extension. This means that only one file is needed when sharing or distributing the presentation. Other associated formats to the .pps file extension are POT and PPTX.

The file extension .pps is also used in GIS programs like the ArcView, wherein they function as codes for the processing set that helps to activate functionalities like management, creation, visualization, and even analysis of collated geographic information. The file extension .pps is likewise present in the Personal Producer program, where it is applied to its storyboard and footage databasing functions. It can also be seen in the Paint Shop Pro image editing software, as part of its generated files.
